Surprise! It’s Pig Week!

Hosted by Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Pig Week is an initiative to educate pet owners about these uncommon pets.  Best Friends recently posted an informative blog about “pignorance” which caught my eye as I recently lost an aunt who found great solace in her hospice caretaker’s pot-bellied pig. When I was searching for an image for this post I Googled “therapy pigs”, a term that not surprisingly generated the following suggestion: “Did you mean therapy dogs?” No, Google, I did not. Even the Internet is guilty of pignorance!

Please take a moment to read the blog entry by Piggy Paradise manager Yvonne McIntosh, which dispels myths about pig cleanliness, size, and intelligence, but be warned – you may never eat pork again.

Update: Helping Beetle Heal

A few posts back we highlighted Beetle, a kitten being cared for through the North Shore Animal League’s Help Me Heal Program. Beetle’s page was recently updated with the following good news:

“Beetle is recovering comfortably in a foster care home that the Animal League provided. Foster care homes allow sick or injured animals like Beetle a quiet place in a home setting to recover. Foster care homes also help prepare animals to be pets. They get acclimated to a home-like setting, learn potty-training, manners and other basic pet necessities.

Beetle’s leg is healing very well. The fracture is almost completely healed; however, the flexibility of the joint is still in question. His splint was removed and we are looking to re-evaluate his mobility shortly. We will give you another update after his next checkup.”

We’re so happy to hear Beetle is on the road to recovery and is being prepared for a forever home – congratulations little guy!

Animation Tycoon Helps Homeless Cats

Mother Nature Network reports that animation kingpin Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, American Dad, The Cleveland Show) is partnering with Heaven on Earth Society for Animals to build a cage-free cat sanctuary and adoption center. The facility will be called Perry’s Place, in honor of MacFarlane’s late mother, Ann Perry MacFarlane, a devoted animal lover and rescuer.

An anonymous donor is matching $10 to every $1 contributed, so hop on over to Causes.com to chip in!

Back in Black Begins!

Today marks the start of Best Friends Animal Society’s Back in Black initiative to help more black shelter pets find forever homes. Black pets are often overlooked at the shelters, but thanks to Back in Black, participating rescue groups nationwide are slashing their adoption fees in half if you take home a black pet between now and September 17th!
